How does one know what can and can't be removed from their system to make it more responsive? I have a HP pavilion xt846 and it is a pain to work with. I want to remove the HP crap that doesn't need to be running but what is the best way to do it and find out how or what to remove/delete? msconfig? selective start-up?

Hi catfishjoe_1,
Run msconfig and disable anything that you don't need. Here are some services that are needed for WinME.

Hey Catfishjoe_1, here are a couple of sites that tells what alot of the startup programs do, they should help you figure out what is needed. Pacs-Portal, Task list

HP's are notorious for not having much room to upgrade: that model you have is an Intel 810 chipset, so your maximum RAM is 512 mb PC100. If you have less than 256 mb installed, you might see some improvement going to 256mb. Can't add an AGP video card to that system, it has no AGP port (that would help the Celeron out a bit).
Cleaning up the background jobs should help = you're on the right track on that. Roger's startup links are highly recommended here a lot - Programs that I usually recommend to remove from startup (and that will run just fine when needed) are QuickTime, RealPlayer, Instant Messengers, file-sharing programs (I recommend uninstalling KaZaa or Gator). If it's especially sluggish while online, you probably want to do the spyware-check routine. http:www.spywareinfo.com has a download page full of such programs, Search & Destroy is getting a lot of attention lately. Best of luck . . . Gary |
