The Mshtml.dll epsiode

I'm just after ripping all my hair out due to this little file.
Was working on a 98se pc, 600mhz, 128Mb with IE 6.0
Anytime anything related to web related content opened the application would call an error in Mshtml.dll(outlook, IE, Media Player, Real Player, folders with web style enabled)

Now, this is what I did:

Searced PCMech forums(of course) , and tried every solution known to mankind, including MS's own fixes, this all included replacing Mshtml.dll(with correct version for IE 6.0), deleting temp int files, history, updating directX, replacing video drivers, downgrading to IE 5.5, and none of them worked at all!!!!

I ended up installing Netscape 6.2 as a stop gap as customer didn't want a reformat.

Any, any ideas whatsoever, this one had me in alot of pain, and the customer was a nice guy so I really wanted a fix for it.

Cheers,
Colin.

I just ran a quick Google look (since the MS Knowledge Base can take a bit longer to navigate) - and noticed that a few of the mshtml errors were related to Gator software. The fixes in those instances were to update the Gator to a newer version or to uninstall it (I don't like Gator much myself - so I'd recommend the uninstall try if you find it = it's just sooo cozy with spyware, it makes me uncomfortable). IE 5.5 was particularly troublesome with Gator.

You could try the Service Pack for IE6, which should net you a nice recent version of mshtml.dll

. . . and, one of the rarest mentions of problems with mshtml.dll were some graphics drivers (so different drivers can be tried) - but this sounds like a long shot. . .

You could try a download and try of some of the anti-spyware programs over at http://www.spywareinfo.com - Spybot's Search and Destroy is getting a lot of good recommends here on the forum. I've used AdAware a lot & like it = but there's a little controversy with it lately, since they've been slow to update it.

Is the pc still at your shop? If not, you could just pass along the info & he can give it a go (most of these fixes are pretty straightforward - nothing terribly technical)

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Thanks for reply Gary, my head was bit messed up yesterday, and I forgot to mention I ran both adware and spybot (first thing I do with any pc i get in!), so Gator wasn't there, the only thing I didn't do and what you mentioned was install IE6 SP1, cuz I'm only on dial-up and dont have it on cd. Thanks for the input.
