Question Formatting floppies on XP.

Has anyone else run into the problem of not being able to open contents from a floppy in XP but able to open them in Win98? Aren't both OS's suppose to format on FAT?

I have of this problem many times, problem is not with xp, it is due to the differances in older/newer floppy drives and low quality of the floppies

Wrong. It's a problem in XP, and MS knows, but can't seem to do anything about it.
There's a KB article somewhere on it.

Formatting prob for floppies in XP? Aren't they formatted in FAT16? What's XP trying to format them in?

Actually, floppy disks are formatted FAT12. I don't know what the problem is with XP. Some research is in order.

The only way that seems to work for me is to format the disk with OS I want to use the disk with. If I am going to use the disk in a 98 machine I format it with the 98 machine. Then I put whatever on it from the XP machine.

I haven't seen the documentation from M$ about it but I have experienced many times.

what I was trying to say in my earlier post was that I have heard of this problem many times, in all the builds I have done, I have yet to experience any of the above problem,

some of my builds are dual boot with w98se and xp.

then I read in another thread that it was ment to say that the problem was with w98 fe and w 95.

as far as I can tell, there is no problem of any kind with xp-pro and w98se in reguard to reading and or formatting a 1.44 3.5 floppy.

maybe I am mis interpeting something or even mis understanding something ,
at this point, I have no idea of what the orginal post is refering to.

could someone please give me some idea of just what the problem is.

thank you

I get these complaints pretty often.

People seem to be having trouble using floppies created with either XP or 98 on the other. I have gotten around it by formatting the disk under the OS it needs to be read by. So if I need a disk for 98, I format it on a 98 machine and then write to it from the XP machine. For me so far that seems to work. The downside is I don't even won amchine that has 9X on it anymore so I have to hope I just have one here when I need it.

I have given this advice to a number of people and it has worked for most but not all. I've talked to M$ about it but I've never gotten any sort of response. Maybe they haven't been able to duplicate it.

So then it probably has to do with the O/S (XP), and not the file format between a FAT32 machine and an NTFS machine, right?

Right force_flow it's not because of FAT32 and NTFS, floppies don't use either of them.

bailey - I've had it happen with 98se.

Could floppies be formatted in something other than FAT12?

Doesw XP put any hidden files on the floppy when it's formatted, or is there another reason why there is a problem?

I'm sure the problem relates to the way the volume info is written but I don't know this to be a fact. There aren't very many things it could be.
