That is very strange since Windows 95 is a 32 bit OS.

What version of Winzip are you trying to install?

I still have the shareware version of Winzip 6 which worked great with W95. You can PM me if you want it.

Hi guys,

I think the problem is that the HD has been formatted as FAT16 and Windows 95b is therefore installed as 16 bit instead of 32 bit.

Rather than trying to convert the HD to FAT32, I think the simplest solution, as you said Nuke, is to use an older version of WinZip.

You can get the 16 bit version here:

ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/zoologie/softw...p/winzip31.exe

Did you do an upgrade reinstallation or a fresh reinstallation?

I'd advise backing up his personal data, reformating the drive and doing a clean install of Win98 using the W98 CD. Don't install W95 first! Just W98.

Since it's an upgrade CD at some point during the installation it will ask for either the W95 CD or some of the Win 3.x floppy disks, so be sure to have either of them handy.

Don't you have the drivers' CDs? I dunno of a method to back them up.

If you don't have the discs then b4 you format make a list of them via the Device Manager (WinKey+Break, then click on the Device Manager tab) so you can download them from the web.

I advise you either get the CDs or dowload them drivers b4 you reformat.

If you do the upgrade over W95 without reformatting and during the installation process, when prompted to save the previous config you say Yes; then, yes you can go back.

But if you reformat and do a clean install you won't be able to.

Dunno exactly where the uninstall Win98 option is, as I have never used that feature. I assume it's under Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Cool

You cain't slave the HD to your friends PC and do a Windows copy. Windows will not copy files in use. You would need to be in DOS mode. That's all I will say.

If it's a Packard Bell, you need to use the Packard Bell restore CD to reinstall 95 from scratch. Trying to upgrade one of those things - or even installing 98 clean - is an exercise in futility.

I just finished poking around in a 486 Packard Bell of my daughter's friend - what fun! Such strange riser cards! Rare never-to-be-seen again parts! (but by golly we got the old thing going again)

. . . as glc mentions, Packard Bells are often best left "as is". . . however, if you don't have the Recovery disk set, we'll have to make do with what you've got (and haven't got). . .

Check in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to double-check if your friend saved the Win95 configuration or not. If it's not there, oh well - a good place to search for drivers is over at driverguide.com. Another place you can try, if the model is the Multi-Media (also called Symphony) series, is at a european site like this --> http://www.packardbell.co.uk/support/node485.asp
go to the "Symphony - Multi Media" link on the lower right, and see if the specs listed match yours. There are many drivers available right there on that page.

. . . and, if Win98 is running at all & you wish to keep it, you can likely fix the SHLWAPI and MAPISP errors by downloading and installing IE6 with Service Pack 1.

Let us know if you need more help
. . . Gary

You might be OK with the drivers from the Win98 CD. If the devices seem to have been detected OK, then those drivers are probably fine.

To use the microphone, type sndvol32.exe in the Start/Run box, then from one of the menus, look for the advanced options - you'll need to put a checkmark in a box for the Microphone in both the Playback and Input, and then set the volume you want [set it fairly high for a microphone, but leave it muted when not in use]. The reason it's not working right now is that the microphone input/output line is muted by default.

Glad it's working OK. . . it's the ancient Packard Bells (especially from the late 1980s) that were especially rough to fix. The NEC era Packards are fairly nice machines.

thanks i wil try that., also my brother called me and and his computer is the same laike the i am talking about and he had an old printer that work fine on printer port (lpt1) but the printer broke and he bought a new one (usb only) the problem is that the computer does not detect it. i looked inti device manager and i did not see any usb controller. he did not had any important thing on hhd so he format hhd and reinstall win 98, after that went to device manager and still no usb controller and does not detect printer.
could the usb port be defective in mobo?
he had never used usb before,
if we buy a usb card (pci) do we have provabilities to work ok?

Have your brother check in the computer's Bios Setup [press the key at startup that is mentioned in the banner "Press F1 (or Del, F10, etc) to enter Setup"]. He needs to look to see if USB is "Enabled" in there. It needs to be, if he wants to try it. Are there two USB ports up next to the ps/2 mouse and keyboard ports in the back of the computer? If so, then the motherboard is an ATX, and the USB should probably be detected by Win98 and installed once it is enabled in the Bios.

Let me know if he needs more help
