Win2k SP3
Hi, Problem is that There are 3 account on my pc. Admin, me and my wife. I am a member of the Admin group and my wife is a member of the Power Users group. I install a Disney Learning program/software as Adimistrator.(for my daughter) I can access/open the program as Admin and from my user account but I'm having trouble with the wifes account. Logged onto wifes account: I try to start the program from the start menu: I get CS: NO DISK INSTERTED The disk is there. I open and shut the try and let the auto pick up run it I get this: INSTALL PROGRAM AS OTHER USER [] RUN PROGRAM AS XXX\wifes acc [] RUN PROGRAM AS THE FOLLOWING USER it shows fields for username and password. [] ALWAYS RUN PROGRAM AS XXX\WIFES ACC No matter which on I choose i get: CS: NO DISK INSERTED Can power users access the cdrom? I even went to the programs folder and gave power users full conterol of the folder. I'm at a loss.. |

Power users can access the cdrom. This sounds like the program was only installed under your profile on the machine. Did you install it on your desktop? No poweruser can get to an Admin (or any other) desktop. Make sure you installed it in program files or something like that. Also, you could try making your wife an admin, installing the program under her profile, and then changing her back to a power user. The first thing is to make sure she has access to the root directory where the application was installed.
It really sounds like it is installed someplace that only admins have access too. You could also right click on the folder it is in, and go to properties, then security, and give your wife access to the folder. That might work too. Last edited by pzs22; 02-26-2003 at 12:04 PM. |

It was installed in the root directory of which she has access to. It isn't installed in any one users folder.
I did find this. If I right click the d drive(cdrom) and select security it has DO NOT SHARE THIS FOLDER selected. Should I change it to share? |

You shouldnt have to share your cdrom since she is accessing it from the local machine. Put a music cd in, if she can play it under her account she has rights to the cdrom.
You can also try this... When you get: [] RUN PROGRAM AS XXX\wifes acc [] RUN PROGRAM AS THE FOLLOWING USER it shows fields for username and password. [] ALWAYS RUN PROGRAM AS XXX\WIFES ACC type your administrator username/password where is says run the program as the following user. This should get it kicking under her account. |

I did add her to the admin group and everything works fine but I changed it back. I need it to work with her as a poweruser. Just curious. Do you have to do anything special to a program when installing it to make it accessible to everyone? |

I find it very strange that she needs to be an admin to run a disney program. You could try installing it under her acount. Let me know if that check box works.

It says NO DISC INSERTED. not NO DISK IN INSERTED. If that makes a difference. I don't know.

Does it work if you make her an admin and then run the program? I would think it does, but just make sure its not her account.

Yes, if I add her to the admin group it works. But I don't want to put her in the admin group. My daughter will be using this software under my wifes login. She's 15 months old. God only knows what a child can do as an admin just hitting keys.
I just don't understand why it's not working. The disk must be in the disk drive for the program to work. Could this have anything to do with it? I do have another children's CD that just runs off the disk. No install. That on works fine. I installed Tiger Woods Golf a few days ago under my login. That should also be accessible to anyone also. She can't run that game either. Any other ideas? I really don't want to have to reformat and dual boot with win98. This is a fresh install. |

I removed myself from the admin group now I can't start the program.
i must be doing something wrong. How do you properly install a program in windows 2000 so that all users have access. If I can't fix this, I'll have to reconsider going back to win98. Because if it stays like this, only admins can access programs. That's no good. I've search the CS: NO DISC INSERTED error and came up with nothing. HELP..... Not all programs are made for NT, 2K, XP systems. The main difference is that they won't run as all user unless you change some specific permissions or give someone admin status. So you can
(a.) Try changing permissions (allowing access) to whatever directory the program is installed in. If it is a game they will generally need read and write access to that directory. This is because they will need to be able to save the game. Sometimes also you have to give some extended permissions on the System32 directory also. Make sure if you change permission on a directory that you change permissions to all of the files and sub-folders also. (b.) Give them admin access. (c.) Try to find an upgrade for the program. |
