Post XP's future successor: MS Longhorn

Interesting to see that they're already working on another one...

From what I understand the main update in this program will be that clippy, bubble help, and the cute little puppy will be replaced with a talking Jar Jar Binks.

From what little I have gathered from our M$ rep is that it will be a completely new OS. It will not share anything with the NT kernel. The beta versions that I'm aware of only have Longhorn grahics on XP. The only one I got to play with would be better called a theme and none of the features actually worked. So I guess it was a teaser of sorts.

Cool

Tuf any feedback from your reps what effect this might have on current applications and games if the kernel is changing.

Tuf and Morris are both wrong.
It is based on the NT/XP kernel, but it is a true 64 bit OS.
I've been running the Alpha 3683 build for 2 months.

Thanks for the links, oem_guy_2002!

I thought this was interesting :
Quote:
What's up with the name Longhorn?
A: As I first revealed, the Longhorn name wasn't chosen randomly. Remember that Windows XP was code-named Whistler and the next version of Windows, at the time, was code-named Blackcomb. Both of these names come from ski areas in British Columbia, close to Microsoft's headquarters. At the foot of Whistler Mountain, there is a saloon named Longhorn that serves the local skiing population. So if you're ever in the area and want to take in some local color, Longhorn is a nice stop… after you're done with Whistler.

Instead, Longhorn build 4008 shows numerous evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, improvements over build 3683, which was the focus of my Longhorn alpha preview. This tells me two things: First, the most exciting bits in Longhorn, including the new 3D video-based user interface, the SQL Server-based file system, and a new breed of exciting digital media-oriented applications and services, have yet to be introduced into the core Longhorn code, creating a bizarre pseudo-update to XP with an ugly, seemingly unfocused user interface. Second, there's a bit of subterfuge going on here. Looking over build 4008, I'm constantly struck by the fact that this leak seems somewhat convenient. I almost suspect it was released on purpose, to throw fans off of the real work that's coming down the road. Whether this second point is real or imagined matters little: If you think the final release of Longhorn will even slightly resemble these early alpha builds, then you have a pleasant surprise coming.
So this guy suspects that it was "leaked" on purpose?!

Yes he does. He has good contacts and
will probably confirm that if it is true.

Thumbs down

I dunno about you guys, but for my tastes recently intel and now apparently M$ have just gone in the toilet to come with names for their new stuff. . .I mean M$ Longhorn??? (I mean even though that's the codename) the Intel Tualatin?? Gimme a break. . .Try something awesome on for size, I would so buy a processor called the Intel StingHammer. . .or something at least remotely cool like that. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Dude

My fear is that this new operating system will be full of the old Digitial Copyright Protection crap that won't let you make a custom CD for you vehicle from your own CD's. SO you will not see me rushing out to get it.

Cool

I doubt that it will offer enough improvements for me to abandon XP.
