Exclamation Windows starts to load but then stops.

I installed Windows 98SE on a PC with AMDK6II processor, SIS SY5SSM Motherboard and 96MB of RAM. This was a clean install from a formatted 6GB harddisk. I previously had Windows 95B loaded.
The PC ran smoothly for a while and then had problems shutting down which I thought might have been caused by Anti-virus software.
When I chose shut down from the start menu it would sometimes hang. I uninstalled the Norton Anti Virus software and installed AVG 6.0 instead. After I did this the PC shut down normally.
In January I installed a Philips CD burner with Nero software version 5.5.9.8. The PC did not have any difficulties starting or shutting down for about a week and then after a week on start-up it would hang. I have never received any error messages.
When this happens I have to press the re-set button and start the PC in safe mode. From safe mode I shut the PC down, wait approx 30secs and then re-start the PC. Most of the time Windows will load.
I am not sure whether this is a harddisk problem or is a Windows issue. I anyone out there has encountered similar problems I would like to hear from you.

This site will give you something to try: Trobleshooting start up . I had a client's computer doing something similar not to long ago, turned out there was something in Autoexec causing it.

If you used something other than a full version of Windows 98 SE (like Update or Upgrade) I think there was a shutdown problem. Go to the Windows Update site for the patch.

Sometimes the uninstallers don't remove things completely. Just in case, you can try a run of RegClean 4.1 (that version works pretty well with Win98 & Win98SE) --> http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list [just in case some Norton is still trying to run & getting stuck]

You can try looking in on your background jobs, too. It helps response time by keeping things to a minimum anyway - and if it helps the system shutdown better - bonus time. The pacs-portal list gets recommended a lot. The first link if for general info, the 2nd link is the list of startup jobs themselves --> http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...artup_full.htm

The patch that Ray mentions is the one that disables "Fast Shutdown" . . . (among other things) . . . it gives the cache on the hard drives more time to write to disk. There were also some fixes for the Amd processors too (I think they made it into that same patch)

The most thorough site for troubleshooting Shutdown problems is probably the aumha.org site. It has lots of helpful tips to try: http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm

Best of luck
. . . Gary
