Minimum RAM for XP

A nephew of mine told me today that he is planning to install WinXP on his girlfriend's old Compaq. I don't know the size of the HD but I do know it has only 64MB of RAM. What is considered the minimum HD and RAM size to handle XP?

Thanks, Crank

Here is the link to the Microsoft page with system requirements:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...on/sysreqs.asp

I did a check on XP home, but from there you can check pro version if you need to, looks to be the same for pro version..

Well you can run XP with 64 according to MS but even with 128mb it would be real slow..256 is better & it flys with 512mb or more..

HDD min size is 4gb but you would prolly want 10Gb to allow for a few other proggies..

I myself started out with 256 but it runs much better with 512.I dont know how well it would run with just 64 or even 128 but I would say it would be a mite slow.

No matter what MS states, my minimum is 256 and 512 or more is better. Here at work I am on a machine running XP Pro with 256 installed. The board is on-board Video, there are four running tasks, the standard services are running, and I have 5 ie windows open with outlook. The available physical memory is slightly above 80mb.

Ditto.

XP is a dog with less than 256MB.

Those requirements M$ lists are what you need to boot and move your pointer around. But if you are going to have more than 1 window open (and you will) you need at least 256MB to actually enjoy the OS.

WinXP will "run" (more like crawl) on 64MB of RAM...but it'll be working mostly from the swap file (or virtual memory) and the hard drive will be constantly chugging away and the system will perform slow as molasses.

Minimum RAM I'd run WinXP on is 256MB.
