Clearing Temp Files in Win ME

Is there anything different about Windows ME that would argue against deleting temp files? I had no qualms about deleting these in my Windows 98 system, but ME is reportedly a bit more unstable.

I have two files which I hesitate to delete. One is described as:msdownld.tmp. The other: TMP628J.tmp. and is a Symantec file. I believe that these files were created when I downloaded and installed IE6 and when I renewed my Norton AV.

Any thoughts about these two files? Also, any prohibitions about deleting BAK files in ME?

Thanks,
Ron

I don't believe so. It's a good idea to clean out your temp folders regularly for any OS.

Any file with the .tmp extension is a temporary file and it isn't really necessary to hold on to it...unless it's currently in use by a program.

The file extension .bak refers to file back ups...I'd hang on to these.

If you are talking about the C:\Windows\Temp folder you can clear them all. If any are needed for anything they will regenerate themselves.

Also, any prohibitions about deleting BAK files in ME? NO, as long as everything is running fine ("BAK" - These are backup files that are created when a more up to date file is installed. As long as everything is running fine, then these can be deleted. )

You can safely delete everything in c:\windows\temp, c:\winnt\temp, and c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp (this folder is hidden) after a fresh reboot.

Thanks guys. The Temp and Bak files I refer to are files I have located on my Hard Drive when typing in *.temp;*.bak. and clicking on: SEARCH NOW. Don't know if I was clear about that. When looking at my bak files more closely, though, I find one that is described as: HCdata.bak: In folder C:/Windows/PCHealth/HelpCtr/Database. Modified 8/6/2001. 2.98MB. This is a big file, 2.98MB. I would like to get rid of it, but hesitate because of its size. Any thoughts about deleting this PC Health data bak file?
