Tweakui
I installed Tweakui on my system but when I try to choose the no arrow option on the desktop the arrow stays there. I also have it set to log on auto at startup but it doesn't do this either. I'm running Win98SE on a P111 with 512 ram. Is Tweakui not installed properly? I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Did you use the version of TweakUI from your Win98se installation disk? [there are some other versions for different Windows versions]
And is the applet available in the Control Panel? Did you reboot after making the changes? (some of the changes don't happen until the system is rebooted) Did you install TweakUI by right clicking on its .inf file and selecting "install"? Is TweakUI listed in the Startup tab in System Configuration? (Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . . from the "Tools" menu, choose "System Configuration Tool"... or from the Start/Run box, type msconfig). You can also look in System Information under "Software Environment. . . Startup". If it's not listed, then it's not loading at startup. If you have experience editing your Registry, and take the usual precautions (back it up first), there's a popular edit that usually removes the arrows. __________ 1. Start the System Registry Editor by opening the Start menu, choosing Run, typing "regedit," and pressing Enter. 2. Navigate through HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT until you find the "lnkfile" entry. (You can use the "Find Next" option to do this) 3. Click to select "lnkfile" on the left pane, then select and delete the "IsShortcut" item on the right pane. 4. You will probably have to restart Windows. You may find that logging off and back on works. 5. To reverse the process, navigate to the same location in the System Registry Editor (regedit). With "lnkfile" selected, right-click any blank area of the right pane. Choose New > String Value. Name the new entry "IsShortcut" (without the quotation marks) and close RegEdit. Again, you may have to restart or log off and back on. __________ . . . Gary |

Search for *.pwl files. Delete the one that corresponds to your username. Logoff and at the password screen leave the password blank and click Ok.

It still doesn't log on automatically. I have to hit ot to log on. The weird thing is that once in a while it will. Confusing!

Chrisk
Did you get the automatic logon you wanted OK? If not, try this: set your primary network logon to Windows logon: Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network . . .in the Properties, for Primary Network Logon, click the down arrow to view the list, and select Windows Logon: it will offer to log you on automatically at boot. Best of luck . . . Gary |

Hmm. . . that usually works. Here's another way to go at it (another Registry Tweak) http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/125/
You'll notice that automatic logons are of course a serious security risk if you are on an always on cable or DSL connection. As that webpage notes, the password is stored in plain text. (encrypted would be much better - a la Win2000) This is all assuming that you have a password & want to logon automatically - and not just want to do away with the logon box (and not login to anything). Best of luck . . . Gary |

No, you should have no users in propfiles if you want to auto logon.

After deleting profiles and the system says that I have not logged on before what should I do? Do I hit cancel or enter with no password and then do I retain personal settings?

Leave the password blank and click Ok. Also check Control Panel | Passwords | User profiles and select the option along the lines of "All users have the same desktop settings"

If you leave blank and click ok then the next message is to save user settings - do I? If I do then I go to users and there is a new user in profiles.

I'm discovering that pointd knows a lot. Nice tip.
Chrisk - good luck with your knee, too. [My mom just had hers worked on yesterday. Amazing surgeries - done in an hour. You get to see the inside of your knee on their screen!] Fixing computers, though, seems less painful? . . . Gary
