Unhappy Loosing time...

My new machine is loosing time, but when rebooted it comes back with correct time. I installed Atomic Clock to help it keep correct time but I don't think that it is just Win98 loosing time. I think it might be heat related... Am I on the right track.

Win98 (1st ed.)
AMD Duron 1300
128mb PC133 RAM
No frills

Hi shuckthecorn,

Your motherboard battery could be on the way out. Try replacing it and see if that helps.

If need be, make a note of your BIOS (CMOS) settings as they will be lost when you change the battery. So, you boot up with the new battery installed, go straight into CMOS Setup and enter the right date, time, and any other settings that have changed.

HTH

Would that also cause its response to tasks and its overall performance to weaken and stagger along?

Thanks,

shuck

No, a failing mobo battery won't affect performance. It just means you start losing time and the BIOS settings will eventually not be saved on each reboot. However, apart from that, the PC should function as normal.

What type of PC do you have - branded (e.g. Dell, Compaq, HP etc) or a generic PC built by a local shop?

Can you give us your system specs i.e. motherboard, video card, PCI cards etc.

If you go into the BIOS, is there a section which reports the temperature of your CPU? If so, what does it say?

Is the CPU fan working properly and turning?

Is the inside of the PC (particularly the CPU fan, case fans, Power Supply) free from dust? That can cause overheating and possibly shorting.

Have you cleared out your Temporary Internet Files and C:\Windows\Temp folders recently?

When was the last time you ran a full Scandisk and Defrag on the Hard Drive?

A dying battery? No.

Do you clean out the Windows Temp folders regularly?

Have you scanned your system for viruses, spyware and trojans yet?

When was the last time you did a format and fresh install of Win98?
