win 95 to 98 - win.com?

A friend has an older Compaq Presario 4550 that came with win95. He wants to upgrade it to win98 for compatiblity with software, etc and bought a full version win98 disc quite cheap (but legal) awhile back.

Anyway, it was giving him the error that he can't install win98 due to an existing os and needs an win98 upgrade disc. So, I ran him through the renaming of win.com to win.bak but it still gives him the same error of needing an upgrade disk instead of the full version.

Any other solutions through this method?

I'm pretty sure most Presario's have a propietary partition and if so you can't just wipe the drive and install win98 from scratch...am I correct?

Thanks.

You are correct. It would help to know what error message he's getting now.

Are you sure that he renamed the file and that he didn't copy it to WIN.BAK.... do a dir search on the entire for WIN.COM and see what happens.

Thanks guys - have been working with glc on this as the owners attempt at to upgrade has failed. Possibly now have two parallel window dir and vmm32.dxd error. I'm going to wipe it leaving the diagnostic partition and load 98.

Well see how it goes.
