Long defrag
After an hour of defragging ...43% was done. And then it seemed
to stop, however the computer was making its normal defrag noises. So I waited--but 50 minutes later it still said 43% done. It wasn't frozen....it just didn't want to go past 43%........... Why did it do this? Using Windows 98....Microsoft defrager........ Somebody out there knows.........thanks........George |

The defrag program for Windows 98 was just flat terrible. What happens is everytime some thing runs it starts over basically. To defrag it start it in safe mode (Press F8 during start up) and run the defrag from there. Or the defrag program that is in Norton Utilities works well.

Hello Waiting,
Try running DEFRAG in Safe Mode or when you normally boot up into Windows with minimal background programs running. Try to only have EXPLORER and SYSTRAY running in the background and then run Defrag. Download a hard drive diagnostic utility from your hard drive's manufacterer website and run a test on the drive to make sure it is OK. Hope that helps! |

During my original Microsoft defrag
My start up menu was turned off My antivirus program was disabled Also screen saver was off And it still got stuck at 43%............. After becoming frustrated I turned the MS defrag off. I ran the Norton defrag and it worked fine. |
