mirc - LAN connection problems

Hello there,

I have just installed mirc 6.03 on XP. I have a small peer to peer
network and share an internet connection (using XP ICS) from another machine which has an ADSL line. The machine with the internet connection has the standard XP firewall enabled (but I have also tried it without).

Mirc installed fine, but I am repeatedly getting an "unable to
connect" message.

Could someone please help as I am new to mirc and don't know where to start.

Thanks in advance

What server are you trying to connect to?
What port?

If you're trying to connect to Dalnet, you're going to have problems...because Dalnet's been having problems for quite some time.

When the "Connect to" window pops up when you open mIRC, click on the drop-down arrow to the right of where the server name shows (directly above the "Connect to IRC Server" button) and select another server from the list...but not Dalnet. Then click on Connect to IRC Server and see what happens. Try Starchat...they seldom go down and have plenty of chat rooms to pick from.

Thanks guys,

Reboot: I was just clicking on connect and letting it work through the default servers (starting with random US DALnet) using all the default settings.

Miz: I tried a few other servers and I was able to connect with starchat and also demon - I know now that it's a server problem and not a LAN/connection prob.

Thanks again guys that's officially sorted.

Matt.

Dalnet was hit with a huge DDoS attack about a month ago. They've basically folded. No word on when or if they're going to be back on.
Undernet, Starchat, Demon, and quite a few others are operating at full speed.
Depending on what sort of chat you want, there are tons of specialized servers around as well.
I have a list of about 100, not sure how many come built in to mIRC now.

Cheers reboot,

I appreciate the pointers. Where is the best place to find a directory of channels?

www.mirc.com or do a google search for "IRC networks".
If it's "channels" you want, open mIRC, and hit the 4th button from the left. Leave the parameters at default, and it will list every channel available at that time, on that server.
