Smile Reinstall W98 over itself, on Cmpq PC

Appreciate some assistance.

Might need to reinstall W98 (possibly first edition) over itself on a Compaq PC. As Compaqs go, the machine just has a Quick Restore CD to work with, and a Compaq partition 'D'.

The owner of the PC may have deleted some necessary Windows files, not sure yet, but looking at all the possibilities.

The Quick Restore CD wipes everything out, so that is not an option, right now, anyway.

May need to install Windows over itself, but using what/where?

Any thoughts on this one?

Thanks for the help.

If your talking about doing it without using the restore disk go to Start-Run-type in without the quotes "C:\windows\options\cabs\setup"
And it will take it from there. BTW you won't lose any of your previous settings atleast I never have.

Thanks much for the info.

Was able to use the Quick Restore CD to get the system back in order. However, wanted to know other options.

Good day!

You can also run the System File Checker to extract a few files if all you need are a few here and there. It has the option "extract one file . . ." You can start it by either going to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . and selecting System File Checker from the "Tools" menu, or from the Start/Run box type sfc.

Best of luck
