Reinstalling Windows Help
My computer got a virus and now when I start it I get the message that Explorer.exe is gone and Windows must be reinstalled. I have the Windows 98 CD, but don't know how to reinstall it without getting into windows. Can someone help me out here? Reformatting is a last resort because I just reformatted a few months ago. Thanks.

Click on Window 98, cannot start windows for instructions: extracting cabinet files . Hope this helps you.

I reloaded Windows over itself once just by booting from CD. Followed on screen instructions.

No need to extract cabs.
If you can get the system to boot to the 98 CD, then just follow the on screen instructions, making sure that you change the install path from c:\windows.000 to c:\windows. That will do it. If you can't boot from CD, then boot to a startup diskette with CD-ROM support, and start an install. If you get an error saying "a previous version of windows is installed, get an upgrade disk", then boot to the diskette. Navigate in DOS to c:\windows and rename win.com to win.bak and then run the install. |
