W95 Install Problem

I installed a new HHD (boot drive) onto one of my machines and was in process of reinstalling a couple operating systems when I ran into a hurdle which is new to me.

BTW - on this system I run DOS 6.22, W95 and WPro2K. I use System Commander 2000 as an OS manager.

I've installed W95 too many times and have never run into this particular problem. The installation goes smoothly until I get the message "W95 is going to run for the first time". In a second or two the screen goes monochrome and I get a message:

insuffcient memory to initialize windows .....quit one or more resident memory programs.....remove items in Autoexec.bat ...Config.sys ...

DOS 6.22 is installed on the partition and after running memmaker, I have 6K+ conventional memory. I note that after W95 fails to initialize, I have 554K of conventional memory. And there's nothing out of the ordinary in either autoexec.bat or config.sys. And BTW, this machine is running a 1 Ghz PIII and I have 1 GB of extended memory in it. And ...I don't have any memory resident programs loaded.

The only reason I install W95 is because I have a couple legacy devices that I still use occasionally and for which no WPro2K drivers don't exist.

I can't figure out why installation is unsuccessful because of "insuffcient memory". I've never had a problem like this before.

Is there something I'm overlooking? Anyone have any advice?

Thank you.

Hi John

I didn't see your post - I missed a few days & it must have slipped down the line a bit

I'd imagine the error has to do with System Commander. Here's the link to their Win95 webpage for System Commander 2000 http://www.v-com.com/support/sup_os_Win95_install.html Maybe you'll see something there to try. They have several methods for installing: maybe you could try a different approach. It might be just a step you're missing. I don't use System Commander, but I remember a few threads about it that mention various errors that are often normal, and are bailed out by a procedure with a System Commander disk.

Best of luck

Also check out this article from the MS Knowledge Base

Could just be a simple matter of editing the VCache entry.

Funny why it didn't show up the last time you installed Win95.

Have you increased the amount of Ram since last installing Win95?
