Service packs & updates

Hi,

I just installed my first copy of WinXP Pro.
All went well....so far

When I try to update, I get to the microsoft website, and it tells me one of the programs im downloading is XP Service pack 1.
When I try to install it, I cant.
It keeps saying invalid key or something

Any ideas>

Ah - ha

The guy in the local PC shop gave me it with another PC he had built for us before. It look s real to me, mind you, I havent even got my glasses on!'

Is this the reason why I cant load up the service pack ?

Cool

XP can only be loaded and activated on 1 PC. Since he built another PC for you, was this copy loaded on it per chance?

Hi,

Yeah, It was on the first PC, which I didnt know about, until just now. They already had the SP downloaded etc.

So, if I want XP on the other PC, I have to go out and buy another copy? thats a bit expensive.. :-(

Yes. Also the second copy you have running will quit after 30 days since it cain't be activated. So don't start loading up a lot of applications that you depend on.

I think its time to go back to Win2000NT or ME.
Hmm, or maybe try downloading one of those Key generators.

Yep .. we got things running smoothly, else there'd be no way to control the type of information from getting illegal. There just isnt a way out from Microsoft's one XP per computer policy. The fact of the matter is that even with a keygen, you still will have to report that generated number to Microsoft when doing WPA. I'd hate to think what might happen if the number you generated turned out sthing that was already registered before etc. So all said and done, better to use your old copy of Windows 2000 or buy a MAC
