Resizing Partitions

Hello all,

I am using Partition Magic 8 and I want to resize my primary partition so I can load up Linux Mandrake. I am wondering if there are any issues with the system not functioning properly if I resize the main partition? Any issues like that?

Anybody use PM before? How can I create a 600MB Linux Swap file? I know how to make a Linux partition with PM though.

How can I resize the partition, where I can have the resize space left over as unallocted space?

Thanks all!

First question is do you really need Linux? Make sure, dead sure. The last and only time I've done that my copy of Red Hat didn't work and my Windows 2000 wouldn't load afterwards. So make sure you need it. Otherwise I don't believe so. Oh and if your gonna partion determine how much space you wanna give up, and leave it unallocated and Linux should fix that space up to what it needs. When installing the OS picker make sure its on /dev/hda. Good luck getting Linux on your machine.

Should I put Linux on 2nd created primary partition or simply put it on a logical partition?

I am going to boot Linux from a floopy disk, so I am not altering the master boot record.

Should I even make a 600MB swap partition? Could it be lower? I got 256megs of RAM right now.

I got no important data on this PC anyways..and I want to give Linux a try..so I see why not

I figured out how to make a linux partition aswell as a swap partition..my question really is, how big should I make the swap partition?

Also guys...

I went to nvidia.com to download drivers for my video card when I install Linux Mandrake. I am not sure which version to download, it is going to be Linux Mandrake 9 and I got Nvidia Geforce 4MX420.

Thanks for the reply guys!

With PM, and a full Linux install, I would simply make a bunch of unused space somewhere, and during the Linux install, create the partitions needed for Home, User, and Swap.
You don't need to use PM to make those partitions beforehand.
Yes, you can get Linux to ONLY boot from a floppy, the options are also included in the Linux installation process.
