Cean install?
Hi I'm new here, was a lurker but have a question I can't find the answer to now.
My friend for some strange reason formatted his HD. He asked me to reinstall xp pro. I know a bit about computers, but never had to reinstall an o/s. So how do I do a clean install? he said he typed "format c:" . where do I go from here? |

Set the bios to boot from CD. Insert the XP CD. You can format and partition, if desired, fromthe XP CD.

No. Just use the XP CD to format and install.

May be a bad xp cd. Is it scratched up?
If not then reboot with the 98 floppy in, at c: type fdisk and hit enter, delete primary partition, reboot with floppy in, at c: type fdisk again, partition the disk and set as active or primary, reboot, at c: type, format C: Then try the cd install again. |

Also XP seems to be a bit more critical of RAM. How much do you have? Can you remove any and still have 128M (64M minimum)? Do you have any quality RAM such as Kingston or Crucial that you could try?

This seems like a stupid question but can you do a clean install with an upgrade cd?

Yes, providing you have a qualifying CD.
If you already have a Windows 98, 98SE, or 2k CD, then you just start the install of XP, and when prompted, put in the other CD, let it go for a few seconds, and then reinsert the XP CD, continue. |
