Talking xp - wot not to do

Q - can u install xp and hav it lock up because u hav not activated it within 30 days? EVEN though you only installed it like 60 mins ago?

A - yup accidently clear the CMOS, only to hav xp think it's Jan 2002, adjust the time/date to current, re-start ur computer and xp think's u hav had it unregistered for like over a year! and locks up tighter then..... err well u know what!!

No... here's an even better what not to do. When I first installed XP, I was messing with updated video drivers. Every now and then, with one set of drivers, it would boot in 16 colour mode, then blue screen and memory dump... all you could do was hit reset. Well, the one time it booted to 16 colours, I got impatient waiting for the dump, so I hit reset. Blew away my C drive. I tried every trick I know to restore it with no luck. Couldn't even do a repair installation as when you booted from the CD, it saw C as being unpartitioned and unformatted... had to start all over again.

Lesson learned.... let it dump.

The other week i defragged my page file and directories, so when I restarted so it could do it, it started defragging, then it paused for a while so i left it, thinking it was just working on that file, half an hour later it was still on the same file so I restarted. That really messed up XP. as all the directories were in the wrong places.
