The first step I'd take would be to reinstall the programs. The program installer needs to put certain files in the system folder, and make changes to the registry, so if you made a new windows directory for XP, you will need to reinstall the programs. Before doing that though, I'd recomend you back up what saved files you might have in it's program files directory, and delete it's program files directory.

This may get messy. Upgrades like this sometimes are.
You may want opt for a clean install. Just save everything you want (don't forget the address book or email that you may want). Reformat and install XP. Just make sure XP is the full version, not just an upgrade. Be sure that you have all the data you want, for after reformatting, there's no going back.

awww man, usually i do a clean install, but i was workin' on my friend's computer and he got tired of his computer crashing all the time and just bought a copy of winXP. he wanted all of his programs but didn't have the disk sitting around b/c he's down here from N.J. for school. so i told him that if he upgraded, he would be able to keep all of his programs and files. well it stopped the crashing but for some reason, most of the programs (about 80%) don't work. well they're not in the start menu. their program files are still there, but for some reason, if i go in and look at the files, everything inside of it is checkmarked as "archived" and that's it. but thanks for the help guys.

Did you run the XP Advisor during the XP installation? If not, it may be that some programs are not compatible with XP.
However, they may run in Compatiblity Mode. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...ng/advisor.asp |

Ok, I tried that and now I'm getting the following message:
Could not start the windows installer service on local computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified. |
