rundll32 Error in Xp Pro
Hey guys,
I have been fooling around on the computer when all of a sudden I got the error message: "Rundll32.exe Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be located in the dynamic link library WINSTA.dll" I get this whenever I try to run System Restore or when I right click on Properties on My Computer. I don't know how I did this, and I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and didn't find anything. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance.

Did you try running SFC?

Ok, I just ran the disk check, and nothing has changed. I'm still getting the same errors. I even tried reinstalling XP and have the same problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

Nope, same thing. Is there any way to reinstall just the system restore option?

Try turning it off by running services.msc
Restart, then turn it back on, and manually start it. |

I'm still getting the same error saying the entry point cant be found in WINSTA.dll, so I think either my rundll32.exe or this WINSTA.dll is corrupted. I just don't want to reformat againa week after getting all my stuff back, do you think I can possibly download someone else's WINSTA.dll, or does it vary depending on each person's system?

Why not run SFC, and extract it from the CD?

Ok, Sorry about that I haven't used SFC before. Now it asks me for a Whistler CD and an XP Pro CD. I currently have an XP Home Restore Cd and the Pro upgrade CD. Pardon my ignorance, but I dont think its detecting it properly. I want to extract the DLLs from the CD, so how would I go about doing this?

Go to DLL World and download those dll's then run SFC and direct it to wherever you save those dll's.
That it is why it is best to CREATE A RESTORATION POINT of a known very good configuration just in case something goes wrong again. You can easily go to safe mode and Restore it back to that created restore point. I don't rely with XP automatic restoration point. HTH |

Ok, I found the dll, but how do I make SFC point to it? When I use the /scannow attribute it goes to the CD prompt by default. Thanks again.

Don't use Scannow.
Run SFC, choose to extract one file, type in it's name, and extract it from the XP Pro CD. If you downloaded the files, just put them in the c:\windows\system32 folder. |

There's no option in my SFC to extract any files, it just asks for the XP Professional Upgrade CD so I put in the upgrade, but nothing happens and it keeps asking for it. I also can't put the files in c/windows/system32, it says the files are in use and I cant find what program is using them.

Boot to safe mode, and see if you can replace the files that way.

OK, I reinstalled XP, but now all my settings are gone. In my Documents and Settings folder, I have two copies of the same username. This new one, which I dont want, and the old one which denies acces when i click on it, even as administrator. Can you tell me how to revert back to my old settings, I think the domain or something might be messed up. My main login "Ken" now has a folder in Documents and settings called "Ken" which is the old one that I want but cant access, and "Ken.Dell" which I want to get rid of. I don't want to reformat all over again. Any solutions?
