easiest way?
I have a dual boot Win2K and WinXP home each installed on physical 40Gb WD JB hdd. Now I find that I do not use the Win2K hardly at all. How would be the easiest way to reformat the C:\ Win2K hdd and make it an extended partition for the D:\ WinXP volume. Be patient folks and I need a step by step as I expect editing of the NTLDR or something that I have as yet not attempted. Don't assume that I know a thing and you will probably give me steps to do this that I might understand.

Me thinks it won't be fun doing this. Your XP registry has a few thousand entries that say look at D:\program files etc......These entries won't change to C:\ all by themselves. Possibly Partition Magic will do the trick for you...

The easiest way is to simply delete the C:\winnt folder, and anything else you're not using on C.
You can't remove any of the boot files on C though. Then edit the boot.ini to remove the reference to 2k. Partition Magic would do very nicely here. |

The method I used once was to boot to XP, click start\settings\control panel\system\advanced\startup and recovery. At the top select Windows XP as the default OS and clear the box that says "display a list of operating systems" then click your way out. This way Xp will boot normally without giving you a choice as if it were the only OS.
Then simply delete everything in the C:\ drive and in administrative tools\disk manager, reformat the drive, delete the drive, make it a primary\extende partition, etc etc, whatever you want, or Use PM to make it one logical drive. Even though your boot.ini will show W2k, it will still boot to Xp normally. We can edit the boot.ini file anytime, but it won`t be necesarry. IF you follow these steps. |

Go ahead and try it, then format the C drive, and it won't boot. (If you can even format C successfully)
The MBR, boot.ini, NTLDR, and such are on C, and if you format it... |

Sounds like the easiest way might be to totally begin again. It wouldn't be that problematic as I don't have any new stuff to speak of that I hadn't backed up from other PC. I have my 98 box sitting right here if I experience difficulties that I might not expect. I will do a little thinking on the suggested methods and post back.

Yes you are absolutely right reboot. My suggestion would have caused a problem, fixable, but a problem nonetheless.
It occurred to me today that when I used my method I removed XP from the D:\ and left W2k intact on C:\ My apologies for a bungled post. Glad you caught it. |
