Dumb question #35235

Can I install Windows 2000 Server in my home PC?

I'd like to give it a try.

Will it run like the Win2k Pro version?

Is it better than XP Pro?

Yup, you can, should run about the same as Win2k Pro, don't see an advantage to running it over XP Pro.

I've run Win2K Sever very successfully on a PIII 450 with 256 MB of PC133 SDRAM. It runs just as stably and well as Win2K Pro, but will be a little heavier due to the extra background services that it needs to run, especially the Active Directory Services. Also, be aware that since it is a server OS, it will not allow all types of users to log on locally (that is, on the server).

Otherwise, beautiful.

Is there a way to disable all those services? It will be running only in one computer, no network here.

ADS is what Win2K Server uses to store and manage user acounts even when it is not on a network. The other services, you will have to check out at Blackviper's site (www.blackviper.com).

If you just want to use 2K server instead of 2K pro then there is no need to install Active Directory. It will consider itself as a member server in a workgroup quite happily and you will be able to create users etc exactly as you would in 2K pro.
