Disabling Bios Gaurdian in Win ME

ok new problem.

Updated versions of AMD compatable boards come with a gaurdian feature for the flash bios.

This is meant to prevent a virus from rewriting your bios.

The MB website says to enter CMOS setup screen and go to BIOS FEATURES and click disable to reflash the bios.

I have no problem getting the cmos screen but I cant find the BIOS FEATURES anywhere ?

um.........this is starting to give me a migraine.

help

The option to Enable or Disable the Bios Guardian program is under the menu "Advanced Bios Features" - according to that link you posted in your other thread. But then FIC has been known to have a little trouble with English translations! I'm guessing that the menu probably reads "NOVUS" or "Advanced Chipset" or simply "Advanced".

Lucky you, you get to search through the menus. It's in there somewhere, usually near the top of a list.

. . . which FIC board did you try? I built a system for my wife with the Fry's special: FIC AN11 Raid "Stealth" board and XP 1800+ - a while back (7 months ago? or so). Purrs so soft you can't hear it (big heatsinks & Panaflos) - quick as a hungry cat, too. [maybe they should've called it the "Stealth Cat"?] I like their boards: not the fastest benchmarks ever, but quick - and stable. I've never had any problems, even back in the days of their Socket 7 boards.

[p.s. - regarding the AMI flash program not saving a copy of the older bios (surprised me!) - you can also often download a copy of the original bios from the same website you found the update at. All the bios flash programs that I've used have always offered to save a copy of the old. Strange that this one doesn't]

Award flashes always prompt to save the old.
AMI do not (sometimes, depending on flash loader version).

I didnt buy this board it came in my compaq 5000r I want to upgrade from 750 mghtz duron to 1.3 gig antholon

I figured I would update the bios prior to this update since this board tops out at 1400 mghtz

I like this system basically had it about 3-4 years cant even here it run, but some new games I bought really have it torqued out to max

The speed of the processor is the cause of the lag in these games IMO

I am usually pretty far behind the computer curve. I upgraded to this from 75 mghtz pentium

just figured i go ahead and break the 1 gig threshhold while there are still thunderbirds and they are giving them away for $35

You should see a nice improvement, since with the Tbird you'll not only get more clock cycles, you'll get all that extra on-chip cache, too.

If you don't see much improvement, a video card upgrade might do it. After that, you're into the money for a new cpu/mb/RAM [since I imagine you're running PC100/PC133 memory on the older motherboard]

(I'll bet that the $35 Tbird will be all you need)
Sounds like fun

If you think you might need an extra case fan to help out, http://www.casecooler.com has nice prices on the low noise Panaflo fans. For a dollar more, you can order a four pin Molex connector & run it off your main power supply (and not stress the motherboard any more - since it's got more to do now with the MX440 to power).

. . . and you know, that system sounds pretty good. I've got a bunch at home, and yours would be newer than all but the one I made for my wife (the XP).
