Accessing BIOS

In order to access your system's BIOS, you need to do the following:
1. Shut your computer down.
2. Wait for a few minutes to clear the RAM.
3. Turn you machine back on using the Power Button on the front of your machine.
4. Press and hold the DEL key on your keyboard as soon as you have turned you PC on. Do this before or as soon as you see the POST CPU check and RAM integrity count. Some systems may start beeping and not boot if you hold the DEL key down, so you may want to press it about twice a second. The DEL key ususally is the default key to access the BIOS.

On some OEM systems and with some BIOS types, you may need to use the F2 or F1 keys on your keyboard to access the BIOS.

Be extremely careful with what you do in your BIOS Setup, as this is the basic setup of your PC. Changing settings carelessly may cause your computer to not boot at all. If you have a problem, simply access BIOS again, select "Load Optimized Setup Defaults/Load Safe Setup Defaults", save by pressing the F10 key, press "y" to confirm changes and exit the BIOS. Reboot your PC.

If your system is already running without problems, do not tamper with the BIOS settings unless you really need to make changes that might give you better performance.

Cool

What kind of PC? Most, as Pillainp pointed out require that you hit the "DEL" key during boot. You will see a msg. in lower left corner to hit "DEL" to enter setup. Some PC's require something different though. So make of PC, mobo if known will be needed if "DEL" doesn't work.

If you just want to identify bios and version quickly without rebooting, run regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System

When you turn on your computer, watch the bottom left portion of the monitor screen...that's normally where the system will tell you which key to press to get into setup. You may need to press the Pause/Break key to stop the screen from going by too fast. And if there's a HP splash screen in the way, press the Esc key to remove it...if that doesn't work, try the Tab key.

Be careful with what you do in the BIOS lest you mess up your computer.

The best thing to do while tinkering with the BIOS is to have the mobo's manual in hand so you can check at the description of each item.

I think he just wantss to look at all the stuff in there. The BIOS won't let you quit without saving first.

To enter the BIOS on an HP, hit F10 during boot.

That is the problem. If he changes a parameter and saves it some trouble could arise.

The best path to take is to look around and then select the "Exit without saving" option.
