Question xp media center

does anyone have/know anything about windows xp media center edition. my dad is looking at a pc that has this on it, and he plans to hok it up down in our basement becuase we don't have a media center down there. what is different about it, and is it worth it? thanks for the help

I have it, and it's great...IF you have the peripherals to attach to the computer to make it all work nicely.
You need an IR controller, and TV out, as well as audio out to a stereo to really appreciate the goodies.
IMHO it's a waste of time for most users, as it's basically a bunch of built in toys to run the media you currently have.
It is NOT a stereo system OS.

is it possible to buy the os and load it onto a pc that i already have, or is it best to buy it preloaded. does it come with the peripherals, or is that extra?

Sure. You can load medai center on to any reasonably new PC. I have it running a four year old AMD Athlon XP (2500+) system and it runs beautifully.
