Windows protection error (Win98se)

I keep getting Windows protection error, you need to restart your computer message. The pc will bootup as normal and after 4 or 5 minutes the screen goes black and the error message appears. Weather I use the pc or leave it idle it still gives me the message. I did a clean install of win 98se and I still have the same problem.

Any ideas?

Regards

Bugnut

What are your temps?

Do you have a zip drive? If you do, try disconnecting it, then boot up.

PC is always run with case covers off. I have no zip drives.
The pc is an old p233 oc'ed to 266. Changed bus speed from 66 to 75. 256 sdram 2hd (2.1gb & 312mb) dvd rom. Mobo asua txp4.
The pc ran great for the last several weeks after being oc'ed.

Try dialing it back down to what it was before.

Overclocking can cause file corruption...that may be what happened here. So even if you dial the speed back to stock, the errors may still occur because the system file are already corrupt.

And even if it's just a little increase in speed, it's not just the CPU that's overclocked...it's everything. Some hard drives don't like to be overclocked at all and your PCI bus may have little tolerance for it too.

What's the exact error message?

Was the system running at stock speed or overclocked when you installed Win98SE?

If it's the same thing I've gotten, it's just a black screen with "Windows protection error." written in top left of the screen.

I loaded the OS in both OC'ed and design configuration. I still get the error message.

Bignut, I get rid of the message by disconnecting my zip drive. That's why I asked you if you had one. That usually works 95% of the time. The 5% of the time it doesn't work, I just turn it off and let it sit for a while to cool off. When I come back 30min to an hour later, it's fine.

The name is Bugnut, But in this case your right I am a big nut. Thats what my wife calls me when I sit for hours in front of my PC trying to get it going after I screw it up. I like to see how far I can push the old PC's clock speeds. Some cpu's were run so hard that they blistered. Anyways I will set the pc back to design speed, format the hd and reload the OS. I will let you know how it turns out.

Reset bus to design speed and reloaded the OS, ATI AIW drivers and Kaaza. All works well. I optimized windows using Hardware Junkies settings from MSN.
I don't like to lose in the OC game, but it seems that this mobo is one up on me.

Thanks again
