We’re having a problem getting XP to start on a new build. After installing XP we get “We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully.” We tried safe mode also but it would not start also. Ran a repair and it shut windows down also. It said to disable any anti-virus, defragmenter or backup utilities. To my knowledge none are running since we have not been able to start windows for the first time. It also said to check hard drive for proper configuration. We don’t have a clue how to do that.
It said to run CHKDSK /F. Couldn’t get /F to work but CHKDSK /P worked and said it found one or more errors in volume. We ran it again and it found no errors. At the bottom of the message we got after attempting repair it says: Technical information: ***Stop:OxOOOOOO24 (OxOO19O2FA, OxF8OC7O4C, OXF80C6D4C, Ox8O8262EC) System Motherboard: Intel P4 Model# D845GEBV2L Chipset: 845GE CPU: Pentium 4 P4 2.4BGHz Northwood RAM: 512MB KINGSTONPC2700 HD: WD 175GB 7200rpm Power supply: Enermax 350watt Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated. |

Is it a LEGAL copy? Is it XP Home or XP Pro? Do you have the right serial code?

How is the hard drive jumpered? It should be set to CS or CSel.
Try another IDE cable. Do you have any extra RAM you can swap in? Cricket

How do you have the Hard Drive partitioned and did you use Western Digitals EZ Install floppy to do it?

It’s a new legal copy of XP Home, OEM full version, never been used before. We have the serial code sticker that came with it.
The hard drive is jumpered cable select. We don’t have another 80-wire IDE cable. Can we use a 40-wire cable? We don’t have any extra RAM. Just the one stick. I did not use the Western Digitals EZ install floppy to partition the drive. XP is the first thing I installed. It took quite a long time to format. I think there were two options to partition but I don’t remember which one I selected. It was the highlighted one. |

My son found another 80-wire IDE cable. We’ll try it.
[edit] There were two floppies with the hard drive, one is an ATA controller card driver, the other is WD data lifeguard tools, data lifeguard, diagnostics, ultra ATA management. My son suggested we format the drive and start over after we switched IDE cables. Seems like a good idea to me so we’re doing that now. Last edited by Familyman; 03-29-2003 at 09:11 AM. |

If you still have problems, boot it with the data lifeguard disk and run diagnostics - if they come up clean, zero fill the drive then try the XP install again.

XP is up & running.
We formatted the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick) this time. Thanks for your help.
