Is it faster to defrag in safe mode on WIN XP? Will doing this cause any problems??

You would normally Defrag in Safe Mode so that other programs or applications don't interfere with it. As long as you don't have anything running in background and have your screensaver turned off, you shouldn't have any problems.
Defrag will probably be slower in Safe Mode since DMA won't be enabled. Yes, it's safe to Defrag in Safe Mode. Cricket

No need to defrag in safe mode with 2K/XP - it will defrag in the background while you work without constantly restarting like with 9x/ME.
