What are your complete system specs?

Was the 120GB hard drive fully recognized by the BIOS when you installed it? Or did you have to use a BIOS overlay or PCI IDE controller card?

Anything else installed recently?

At what point does the system hang?

Download the Powermax diagnostics utility fromt the Maxtor web site and use it to test the drive.

Be sure the cables are properly plugged and that you are using the Cable Select setting.

Do you have S.M.A.R.T. enabled in the BIOS? Does it give a warning?

The bios did fully reconize the harddrive without using a pci adaper.

amd k6-2
120 gb 8mb cache
256 mb of crucial memory

When i installed the harddrive i also installed the 256 of memory. The computer hangs when it is about ot change to the windows desktop. it just hangs there.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? If it gets into Safe Mode okay, you have a virtual driver issue.

With the added amount of RAM, how much total RAM do you have? Win98 doesn't like it when there is more than 512MB of RAM without a tweak to the vcache in system.ini. See this thread and this MS Knowledge Base Article.

You only have to make tweaks to the vcache in system.ini if you have more than 512MB of RAM. That's not the problem here.

Since you could get into Safe Mode okay, it seems your RAM is okay (Himem tests the RAM before letting Safe Mode start).

How is the hard drive jumpered? And what type of IDE cable are you using? A 40 wire IDE cable or the newer 80 wire IDE cable?

If you're using a 40 wire IDE cable, jumper the hard drive to master or slave. If you're using a 80 wire IDE cable, jumper the hard drive CS or CSel and connect the blue connector to the motherboard, the black connector to the master or main hard drive and the grey connector to the slave drive.
