Switching to earlier version of 9x
I want to remove Windows 98 Se from an old, old system and install 95. This thing will not run very well at all the way it is. Im wanting to wipe everything out and start fresh. Can anyone talk me through this? What I should expect? I do not have a Win 95 boot floppy. Ive got one for Win 98, though. Am I going to have trouble with my drivers, my registry, or anything else? What about my bios? I have upgraded my OS before, and Ive formatted a hard drive once, but Ive never done this before. Im a little nervous. Im going to have two small hard drives installed if that info will help you. I think I want only the OS on the smaller of the two, and everything else on the larger. Does that sound right?

Just make sure you save anything off of the HDD before you format. Address book and emails are usually forgotten.
Just stick the boot disk in, type format c: at the promt, shut down, restart, type x:/setup in the prompt (x being your CD drive) and just follow the installation instructions. That's a really quick overview.

Hi mountaineer,
You may have a FAT 32 HD, and Win 95 is just FAT. Win 98.2 is far superior than to 95, and you will lose "functionality" by going backward. Many newer device won't even work with 95, including things like CD burners and the like... As mentioned above, you will have to wipe the slate clean and start all over again. Mind giving more details on why you want to go backward?? TwoRails |

I want to go backwards because the computer came with 95 installed on it. the previous owner upgraded it to 98se and it never worked well after that day. In fact, he bought a newer one insteafd of fixing this one. Its got a 166 MHZ processor, 72 MB of ram (I just put in a pair of 32 MB chips), a 1.2 Gig HD. I want to slave a second 1 Gig to it. It will use nothing like scanners, printers, and the such. Should I replace the 2x cdrom with a 4x? Ive got one lying around. n This will be used for simple word documents, and some very simplistic games for a three year old to learn computers on. Can anyone talk me through what to do in regards to wiping everything out and starting out fresh? I really dont know where to start. It wont bot up without a boot disk, and I dont know anything about DOS commands. Sorry, I came along with Windows Me Xp. Ive never had to do this stuff before. Thanks as always Guys (and Gals)

A 166 with 72 megs ram will run 98SE just fine - leave it on there.

I started another thread asking for help with this computer. I could not fix my hard drive problem. Ive now tried three hard drives, all say the same exact thing. Its under PC Hardware.
