Start up programs
What is a permanant way to remove programs that start up when you reboot? I can uncheck them under MSCONFIG, but how can I completely remove them from the menu?

if you mean the msconfig menu? you will have to uninstall the program...
you also could try going to start/programs/startup right click on the program and click delete.... |

I just tend to use MSCONFIG; however, you can do it the hard way.
Just move the shortcut for the program at C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. Also Start>Run> type Regedit and delete any entries you don't want to run at Startup at the following Registry Keys. Back up your Registry with ScanReg first. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx (in XP) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Setup HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce HTH |

Use a program called "System Mechanic". It has an option to add or delete programs when starts up. Get a trial version of system Mechanic from www.iolo.com

Why do you want to "permenently" remove them? If you want to actually remove them from you hard drive, then uninstall the program.
If you just want them to not start up, then the Msconfig tweak does the job. Don't forget that some progams need to run even if you think you don't need them, others don't. Are there specific programs you're trying not to run? TwoRails |

thanx for all the help so far. what I want to get rid of is my Quicktime start up, and a couple others. everytime I uncheck them, when i reboot, they come back as another entry. So now I have 5 entries of quicktime task, which I don't want or need on start up, but when it is needed, thats teh only time I want it to come up. If i get rid of that startup shortcut then i wont have to worry about it copying itself every time I uncheck it.

Some programs, like QT and Real jukebox/player, will keep coming back, because the program itself has an entry.
Open QT player, and look in the options to turn it off, or "do not start with Windows", it's there somewhere. In Realplayer, it's called "Start Center". |
