There is a function called wake on lan, that if enabled could cause this.. Do you have a network card in that machine???

Yes,
Go into the Power/Power Management section of CMOS Setup and disable everything to do with Wake_On, Power_Up, or Power_On. Many motherboards have the ability to Automatically Power Up at a certain time of the day. If disabling all of these options does not cure it, then try another Power Supply. HTH |

I've also run into the rare instance where it was unstable power in the house. Putting the system on a UPS cured the problem.

This may sound dumb, but make sure you are turning it off and not entering sleep mode.
In XP, suspend mode is always the default whenever the Shut Down dialog box comes up. If you hit enter it will enter suspend mode rather than turning itself off. Thus, moving the mouse or hitting the keyboard immediately turns it back on.

After reading all this I would like to try having my computer "wake-up" sometime just to see if it works.

Yes,
These Wake-On events can be cool, but like all power management functions can sometimes cause problems. I disable the lot, because I like to keep things simple and stable. |
