Is the hard drive recognized by the BIOS? I don't know what key HP uses to enter BIOS, but you have to find out if the hard drive is listed or not.

If not, try another IDE cable.

If it is, let us know and we'll offer some troubleshooting suggestions.

Stick in the restore disk, and restart the computer.

Try another IDE cable.

Find out the brand of the hard drive and go to the manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic utilities to test the hard drive out.

You could try to install that hard drive in another computer as slave to see if it works there, that would tell you if the problem is the hard drive, IDE cable or the motherboard IDE controller.
