EXTREMELY Slow PC
My friends PC is running horribly slow. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the login screen. then about 10 more minutes to even enter a password. Then it took some 15 minutes to get to the desktop, and it wouldn't even load anything in the sys tray for about 30 minutes. I didnt't wait for that so i turned it off. What could be wrong? I know it's an HP and the processor is a AthlonXp +1400.

you're right. it was just a 1.4 I guess. also, when i tried booting to safe mode, the OS select said something like Windows XP Whisper. or something like that.

Do you have a lot of progs loading at startup?

I would do some "Spring cleaning" defrag, scandisk, A-V scan, Trojan / Spyware Scan.

Do a full system scan for viruses, spyware, malware and trojans.
Go to the hard drive manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic utilities and test his hard drive out. Also, you could try removing the sound card, NIC/modem, CD-ROM/DVD/CD-RW and anything else that isn't totally necessary for the PC to operate and see if the system runs better. Something may be defective. Cricket

Have you added or made any changes with hardware or software?
Sometimes extremely long boot times can be caused by incorrect drive jumper settings. |

Try disabling some of the progs that you don't need at startup.
Start > Run > type "msconfig" > click on the "startup" tab |
