Unable to upgrade XP and will not uninstall
Pleazzz can someone out there help
I have a Samsung GT8000 Series notebook. My orginal OS was ME I decided to upgrade to XP Professional. The result was that it could not load the XP as there was missing a hul.dll file. It gave me the option to unistall the XP, I went ahead and did this however it did not unistall and refuses me access to my ME. I subsequently installed win98 into a seperate folder and on boot up it gives me the option to either go into XP OS or Win98 or choosing the Win98 my display settings are set at 16 color and my touchpad doesn't work so I am unable to access my data files in order for me to try and back up before its lost completely. Respects |

The problems you describe having in 98 are most likely due to driver issues. Find out what your video card is and download the latest drivers. The drivers for your touchpad should be on one of the CDs that came with your laptop.
That should help you out somewhat. Do you have a CDRW on your machine? |

Unable to upgrade XP and will not uninstall
Thanks for your reply.
The notebook came with the ME installed and so I do not have a ME disc what they did provide is a Recovery disc but that will wipe off all data I have a CDRW on the machine and Easy CD Creator I have tried to back up using the keyboard function keys but it is too limited. How do I install the drivers through DOS? Cheers |

Click on "Discontinued product drivers" followed by "GT8000" and then "Supported Drivers". From here you can download all the drivers you need to make everything work in Windows 98. Once you have your data what you do then is up to you. P.S. Welcome to PCMech |

You can, in fact, (after getting Win98 happy with the drivers, as shown by pointd & EvilLabMonkey) have a dual-boot machine with those two. I'll guess that something went awry during the XP professional setup, but most of XP may have installed fine, just the boot.ini file didn't get set quite right. You can try booting from the XP disk and running a repair install - which should yield a boot menu when you turn on your computer after that, allowing you to choose between Win98 & XP. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;330184
[. . . and do you know whether or not you kept the hard drive formatted with Fat32 during the XP install?] Best of luck . . .
