Advice on whether to dual boot Win98/Win2000
I have Win 98 on my desktop pc and am considering studying for the A+ exams which are based on Win 2000 at present. I have some disks with Win 2000 - Professional and Server and am not sure which option to install and if it is a good idea to have Win 98 and Win 2000 on one hard drive. The hard drive is already partitioned into 3 anyway so it would be relatively easy to just install into the partition without having to reformat the hard drive - i guess???
Any suggestions on the best way to achieve this please? My aim is to have Win 2000 OS available to use in my studies but i keep Win 98 for my childrens games and guess i have got used to it too!! |

Windows 2000 Professional, if for normal desktop usage. The server edition was not a happy camper when I tried to install it on anything other than the primary partition.
As long as the partition you want to install a 2nd O/S to is empty, you're pretty much all set.

Go ahead. I got Win 98SE, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP Pro in my 4 Partitioned 80 GB WD HD without problem.
I did that so that I could practice what I learned from an IT School. |

I also have Win98 (FE) and Win 2000 (Pro) installed and dual-booting on my main work laptop.
They work fine with no issues. I use Smart Boot Manager running off a diskette to dual boot, but there are lots of options in that respect. I installed Win 2000 first if that helps. The Win98 install was to a new primary partition created from free (unused) disk space, and I used FAT 32 for that and the data partition that is accessible from both. Post back if you need any specific advice. HTH, David. |

Thanks for your replies - I had a major problem with my daughters pc so formatted the hard drive completely and installed Win 2000 on her pc . I have Win 98SE on my pc and XP on my laptop so not sure if i will do a dual boot just yet. Found out today that A+ exams will be based on XP after September anyway!!!
I have stored the info in my brain to be used in the future. Cheers.
