Exclamation Has this happened to anyone else...?

I went to install SP1a to my partiton of winXP Pro. It started installing, but then I think the temps got to high and it froze. So, I had to reboot. When it came up, it did a scan (is it scandisk?) and ran through a VERY lengthy list of repairs. Then I went to see if SP1 actually installed. It was in the add/remove progs, but I could not remove it and could not reinstall it.

Then I though, here was my chance to try out the system restore option. Guess what? It got corrupted! It would not run at all.

So, I just spent 3 hrs setting up my XP partition and installing all of my basic progs.

So here's the 5 million dollar question: what the heck happened?

somewhere I think there is a warrning not to interup the update process as it will make the system unusable.

the way I understand it, the first install of xp is a released too early system with a lot of files with acess holes in it that was used in the developement stages and were not closed before the release,
what sp1 does is to remove all thoes files and replace them with the correct and secure ones, that also is why sp1 is so large,

when your system was rebooted it would have been in a state of no os installed, sorta, therefore the problem you ran into.

at least this is the way I understand it.

it is a dangerious as rebooting the system in the middel of a bios flash, big no no.

I realize what the SP is for, which was why I wanted to install it since I was now able to connect to the net with it.

Lol, I tried to run a repair before I completely wiped it, but when it asked me for the admin password, I couldn't remember! Oh, well... I'll sure remember it now.

btw, I REALLY need to get that new HSF soon

every now and then when i am on windowsupdate, and they have 20 or so new updates, i always burn them to a CD, cos im not gonna wait for 80 or so MB of updates to download next time i reinstall windows, its a lot easier like that
as for your problem, i havent experienced it, SP1 installed every time fine for me

Lol, I know I stopped using "windows update" when I started learning about win98 "never again," I said. If I want something done right, I'll do it myself (especially when M$ is envolved)
