Are you referring to the QuickRes applet that shows up in the System Tray as a Monitor Icon? [and allows you to change screen resolutions and color depths with a single click from a list of options?] (QuickRes shows up in the TaskList as "Rundll")

...if so, that is usually set from the Settings/Advanced tab in your video card's driver.

And do you have more than one User Profile on this system? (several folks who logon under different user names?)

Which version of Windows? [If you have WindowsME, you can try the System Restore option & try a restore point from before this trouble started]

Best of luck

won`t save prefs

I use windows 98SE. There is an option in the video driver software to display its icon in the taskbar, that won`t stay in the taskbar either. I`m trying to avoid the "wipe it clean" and start fresh idea.

I did reinstall 98se, but my inetrnet would`nt work! after! so I uninstalled it!

Thanks for your help.

Hi again

If it's still showing the same symptoms, I did think of one other possibility: if you use msconfig to run a "selective startup", you might be bypassing the files that start your taskbar applets.

If that's not it, you could try uninstalling/reinstalling your video drivers.

If that still doesn't help, another quick try is to download and install IE6 w.SP1 - it updates a large amount of system files and sometimes helps with odd interface problems.

Best of luck

[. . . and of course you always have the option of an "over-the-top" reinstall of Windows]

Thanks for your help Gary. It seems to have solved itself! However I now seem to have a problem with a program called DDhelp.exe, This stops my computer from shutting down and starting up. IE windows was`nt saving its prefs cause I had to reset.

Chris.

You can try updating or reinstalling your DirectX to try for a fix on the DDhelp.exe [You might do the same with your video drivers also - update DirectX first, then update or reinstall your video drivers]. One of it's uses is for the Direct X diagnostic program that runs from the Tools menu of Window's System Information (ddhelp = Direct Draw Helper program). Seems odd that it would be running at either startup or shutdown (of course, if a game is crashing: that could leave ddhelp running). Can't hurt to take a look in on msconfig and your Startup programs, and see if things look kosher there or not.

Also take a look at:

Thanks Gary!
A major swap round of my PCI cards, and updating to DirectX 9.0a seems to have cured it. The startup sequence seems to be Okay and it shuts down now although it does take a little longer to do so.

Thanks Again, Chris
