Hi, I'm getting this error message when trying to shut down or access "My Computer":

Quote:
When I select shut down, I get an error window that says "Illegal operation"; the details say "RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in module RUNDLL32.EXE at 0167:0040600

(Then follows four lines of code)

Thanks for any help!

What are your system specs and what operating system are you using?

Do you have a lot of background programs running?

Isn't RUNDLL32 have something to do with the video signal/drivers?

rundll rundll32 info

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;164787

Most illegal operations are caused by .dll conflicts.

Try disabling running apps sytematically via CTRL-ALT-DEL and then try accessing control panel to try and find the conlict

Edit your start up tab in msconfig to the barest minimum

Have you recently installed\updated any programs or drivers just prior to the problem? If so, uninstall and see if this helps.

Thanks for the help everyone...

Here are the details: Dell laptop is PII, 366Mhz, 98SE, 128M RAM, 6GB HD with 4.5GB free space. Unit has a PCMCIA Xircom card, and all has been running until last email download without virus protection during road trip. No new components. Only problem appears to be the problem in RUNDLL32.exe file, which seems to be missing. But PC cannot be shut down or go into My Computer due to this fault, so I can't explore HD to see if the file is there.

Thanks,
Josh

Obviously you need to run an AV to find out if you have a virus.

Have you tried start\run find to search for rundll32?

Also, start\run type in "C:\" click OK and this should open the C:\ drive.

Once you`ve determined the drive is clean of viruses you can either extract the rundll32 from the CD or reinstall W98 over itself.

PS...Just thought of this. You said you can`t open Control panel. How about explorer. (start\run\explorer)

If you can search type in *.cpl to find all your control panel extensions. Try opening eack individually hoping to find one that hangs things up and this might be the culprit.
