cant open exe files

a while ago, i booted up my computer and i get a prompt asking me what application i want to open exe file extensions with. i wasnt sure what to put, so i just chose cmd.exe just to hold it until i could find a solution. by using cmd, i had to manually type in the file name inorder to open the application. this has been getting pretty irritating. how should i go about fixing this?

btw i use windows xp

OK, what you can try is to open explorer. Click on tools\folder options\file types. Under the window that shows registered file types, click new. Type in "exe". and then click the advanced tab. In the drop down box select "application". Click OK
