Never experience it on Window XP.

But I encountered the same situation under Windows 98 SE. What I found is on an AMD machine & if U run VirusScan, then U must modify yr autoexe.bat to "bootscan", otherwise, it will take U yr whole life to boot up.

By the way, are U running on a new PC?? I've also experience the same situation during the very beginning time of assembling a new PC. If there is anything wrong, like poor contact of floppy disk drive cable or HDD cable or even a faulty floppy disk drive etc may also take U a long time to boot.

Does your computer have a NIC (network card) that isn't hooked up to a network or cable modem? That'll increase your boot time too (it's looking for a network).

XP will be dreadfully slow on startup, if it can't properly start a needed service, or a service that's set to start, but isn't needed.
Start by disabling un-needed stuff, the list is at http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Hello again,
To reply to all of you:
I am on a network and running fine once I start up.Also all of my connections are fine (cables ect).
I went to the site that Reboot recommended (Which is a pretty good site) and tried what they recomended
but it did not work
I will keep trying. If you can think of anything else (Short of Fdisc) I will certainly Try it. If not, thanks for your help to this point

Maybe your having the same problem as this lady's computer I worked on...Do you happen to have multiple accounts on XP, like one for you wife/ husband, kids, parents etc.? If you dont properly log off of the account, it leaves all those programs running, and can really dig into your boot time..

FYI. I just had a problem with a password and my system would not boot. Recieved help from Ezystvy and he directed me to allow my pw to never expire. It solved my slow boot prob and everything is fine.
THanks again to all for your help.

Click the + next to system tools. That will expand it and show "Local users and groups". Click the + sign to expand that. Click users. Double each user that you want to change and the options will be there.

All my users are set to never expire.
