Question Customizing start menu?

Is it possible to change the color of my start menu and task bar? It is not in the appearance window. Any help on how to do it would be great to. Thanks.

What OS? XP?

If it's XP you can do so only in the Classic view, not in the crayola-like new view.

With XP for the default desktop you will need Windowblinds, StyleXP or just the Theme patch then find the themes you like.

I am building a computer for a guy that wants a black theme. I have seen a couple that have been posted that looked pretty nice. I was concerned about the reliability (Ialways make XP look like 2000) but he assures me his current computers has no problems with the theme it runs. I was going to let him "skin" it himself but if I could find something reasonable looking with out spending a lot of time I would do it.

If I could find something that didn't interfere with dependability I might try it myself.

Tuf, there is a theme called Continuum which has Black, silver, grey and blue colors and is the one I use I just change the wallpaper. I have yet to have a problem with the themes and have run them since RC 1.

And here's my desktop: Nightshades by Lightstar.

The wall paper is different, though.

Lightstar's themepacks are pretty darn cool, Tuf, you might want to look at them real hard.

A note to everyone:

For those who have installed SP1
1. Run the proggie and select the Unpatch option.
2. Close it.
3. Now, the workaround suggested by the site don't work, since you won't be able to access your HD if you are using NTFS and boot with a Win9x/ME/DOS bootdisk. I think this option only works if you are using FAT32.
4. Anyway, write down the instruccions provided to patch manually and reboot.
5. Hit the F8 key immediately after POST to access the boot options.
6. Select Safe Mode with Command Line.
7. Log on as Admin.
8. You should have the command line running.
9. Procceed to patch manually as per the site's instructions.
10. Reboot.

Voilà! That's it. Enjoy the themes.

For those who still have not installed SP1
1. Before installing SP1 run the proggie and unpatch.

2. Install SP1.

3. Once SP1 is installed follow the previous instructions from point 4.

Hope this helps.

I agree with pillainp the themes by Lightstar are very nice.

Nice job there NK, but I have never had a problem installing the patch and swear that I have used it before with SP-1 installed.

Sleepypost, THX! I'll get around to it someday, I just went thru a reinstall bout two weeks ago and have yet to get everything installed as well as all the little tweaks.

Yeah, Nuke,
The patch works fine with SP1 installed. I did just a day or two ago, and SP1a was installed and running at the time. The patch went off without a hitch, as attested by the screenshot in my last post.

Well, the patch worked for me before SP1a. Then I installed SP1a and when it finished the patch was messed up. The only themes available were the ones that come with XP and whenever I installed the Illusion theme and tried to switch to it in the preview the windows appeared blacked out and if I hit the Apply button the view would change to the classical Windows and the theme would still be missing. With the other themes I kept receiving an error message.

Ran the patch again to fix dat and it didn't fix anything.

Then I uninstalled the SP1a and discovered two things:

1) That the problem persisted.

2) That the SP1a cannot be completely uninstalled. Even when it informs you that it has been uninstalled properly, it leaves hidden remnants of it in Windows. Typical of M$.

So I applied the SP1a again and did all the steps I typed above.

Those Lightstar themes are very nice. I have downloaded the Nightstar one and have been playing with it. It seems to work very well and their work is outstanding.

Thanks Guys!
