Operating sytem

My system is Win98. I get the impression
from the way that I have to shut down that two systems are running. Does anyone Know how to check this and how do I uninstall one of the systems.

could you please explane what you mean by the way you shut it down that it is like two systems running.

I don't think you can have two systems running on it.

When I click `shut down` the "End Task" splash screen appears, which I cancel before I can go through the Shutdown routine which does then shut down

Most likely a program is hanging and not shutting down properly. It should indicate which program it is.

It never hurts to trim down your starup menu in msconfig to the bare minimum. (scanreg and systray)

The splash screen is the `programe busy` one with the three buttons "Wait", "End task" and "Cancel" which as I say I click "Cancel"

Try contro-alt-delete and see what is running in the task manager just before you shutdown, that should give you a clue as to what program is giving you the problem.

How many programs do you have running in background on your computer? Do you have a lot of icons in the systray, next to the clock? Those are all applications running in background.

What antivirus program are you using?

One of those applications is hanging at shutdown (probably McAfee). Try right clicking on those application icon and chose Exit, Disable or Shut Down to turn them off (one at a time) and then shut down your computer to determine which one is to blame.
