No CD-rom in MS-DOS mode
Hello, When i shutdown/restart in MS-DOS mode from Win98, i type in E: (for my cdrom) i get this "invalid drive specification". can anyone help please. Heres my system info hope it helps.
MSI 6167 MB / 2 hard drives / Viper 770 ultra video card / 512MB ram / 2 floppy drives / Athlon 500Mhz cpu / Kenwood TrueX 72X CD-ROM. CD-ROM book says no special drivers needed, win98 will take care of required drivers. Machine works fine in all respects except for not recognizing the CD-ROM in MS-DOS mode. thanks to all who help us all................ Fred |

I don't believe DOS recognizes optical devices. I believe you have to use something like a boot disk that contains support for CD-ROM.

Your CD ROM should have a driver disk that will install MSCDEX.EXE in the autoexec.bat file for use in DOS.
Windows9x itself uses a built in driver configured in the registry and doesn`t need any others installed. |

Hi, My CD-ROM did not come with any software, the book says this cd-rom will be recognized by windows and load all required drivers automatically. Is there any way at all i can get MS-DOS to recognize my cd-rom? thanks

Try making a win98 boot disk, boot up with it, and select to startup with CD-ROM support.

Force-flow's bootdisk idea should work, if the generic DOS drivers will work with the Kenwood (the generic ones are from Oaksys). If those generic drivers work, you also have the option of booting from your Win98 CD and choosing that same option "start computer with Cd-rom support".
If you haven't made a boot disk before: go to Start/Settings/Control Panel - -> Add/Remove Programs --> "Startup Disk" tab. You'll need a blank floppy in the floppy drive and your Win98 CD in your Kenwood. Only takes a minute. If when you boot with that disk you still can't access your Kenwood (which, by the way, will probably be drive "E", since most Win98 emergency disks create a temporary "RAM drive" with helpful tools in it), you can try downloading a bootdisk with a few extra generic DOS cd drivers on it from http://www.bootdisk.com If that still doesn't work, you're going to have to find DOS drivers specifically for your Kenwood. I took a quick look around & didn't see any right away (surprised me a bit). If you can find DOS drivers, you'll want to add them to a Win98 floppy bootdisk. Once you have the right DOS drivers, you can install them, and create a shortcut that loads those drivers in DOS mode = this way you'll finally be able to just click an icon to reboot in Dos with your Kenwood available. DOS is quite a different world than Windows . . . . . . Gary |
