Question windows 98 custom install question

I've just finished my first build and its only taken me six months to do it, funding comes slow here, I've fomatted the HDD and everything so far looks good, My question is this, can windows 98 be downloaded from the disk that came with the HP I bought a number of years or are these cd dics dedacated so to speak, to the HP. I know I don't want all the junk that comes on these disc from HP, can a custom install put just windows 98 on my new puteror should I wait another month when I can afford to buy a n OS. I'm new to the world that seems to come naturally to some on here so if my question seems uneducated it is .. thanks in advance, Terry
Also keep up this great site it is from here that most of the info I've used in my build came from...

Hello Midnightflyer101,

Those disk(s) are specifically designed to work with HP computers, and they will not work with any other computer.

When you install it, just uninstall the stuff you don't want.

I don't know about HP, but here is my experience with Dell. I tried installing Windows with a CD that came with DELL. The CD can actually tell whether the PC is a Dell computer or not. In other words, I could not install the Windows using the Dell CD on my own computer.

Hey Terry, congrats on the new build. I would wait and buy an OS, move up to WinXP, it seems alot more stable and handles the computer's resources better. Also, having a full install cd can make things easier if it comes a time you need to reinstall or repair the OS.

os

I agree, I'd wait for a new operating system. If your a student and you have access to another windoze os you can get a good deal on win xp pro from newegg .com. Think it was 80 some dollars. Older op system is needed to install xp as it is an upgrade- maybe it will recognize your hp disk with win 98 on it!!
