New mobo and Win 98 Problem
I've had fun getting a new cpu, destroying my old mobo installing it and haveing to buy a new one.
So finally installed the new mobo and cpu at the weekend and hardware wise everything seems fine, boots up and recognises all my bits and pieces. But now windows98 wont load and hangs just before it supposed to come up. I'm guessing this is because of the new mobo and I need to reinstall windows? Am I ok just to reinstall over my existing windows directory, is there any way I can keep my start menu programs and favourites etc without being able to boot into windows? Maybe by taking a backup of the relevant folder or whatever from DOS (not sure how this is done though |

is the new mother the same model as the old motherboard,
if not, I would boot into safe mode and remove all the devises and then let windows redetect them. |

Did you do the Enum Trick ? This would have made it all go like clockwork.

Its a newer mobo and not the same as the old one.
I'm afraid the pc wont boot up in safe mode either, it turns itself up when windows is about to roar into life so no chance to try the enum trick and couldnt do it beforehand as I destroyed the old mobo! |

Boot to a Win98 startup diskette, and reinstall windows right over top of the original.
The first thing you need to do from the A:\ prompt, is rename win.com to win.bak. It's in the c:\windows folder. In the install process, you will be prompted for the installation directory (folder), and it will be c:\windows.000 Change that to c:\windows and it will install over top. Ignore the dire warning that some files will be overwritten, this is what you WANT. |
