Question configuring and updating files

Can anyone tell me why my windows 98SE always tell me its “configuring and updating files” every time I boot up?

I have virus checked the system and there is nothing!

Have you installed any new software or hardware lately?

At what point specifically in the boot process does it do this?? When did it start, and can you pinpoint to anything you did like windows updates or anything that coincides with when it started? Check startup tab thru the msconfig utility, and if your system does execute autoexec.bat file during boot, look there for anything unusual...

This has been happening for some time. I have not installed any new software for some time.
I will have a look at the auto exec. Thanks
